Derailment slows train traffic

Little impact on travel for motorists

A Union Pacific train westbound on the south tracks through Greene County was stopped by an eight-car derailment Monday night just west of the crossing at County Road P-14 between Jefferson and Scranton.

According to Union Pacific spokesperson Mark Davis, the train was headed from Chicago to North Platte, NE, when the eight cars derailed at about 7:30 pm. The train cars were empty and there were no injuries. No crossings were blocked due to the derailment.

Equipment was already on the scene Tuesday morning. Crews are working to replace about 25 concrete ties on one track, with completion of the job anticipated for mid-afternoon Tuesday. Additionally, repair was needed on about 200 feet of the other track, with that work expected to be finished by noon Wednesday.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation, Davis said.

A few years ago, a much larger derailment in which many cars were damaged, blocked the P-14 crossing for days while clean-up and repair was done.
